We had seen the commercials on TV many times… “Moon Dough, the revolutionary new dough, that is like nothing you’ve ever played with before!” … so when we got a Moon Dough playset in the mail from Team Mom, my girls squealed like it was Christmas!
What is Moon Dough?
Geared towards kids ages 2-4, Moon Dough is an out-of-this-world new molding compound. It’s soft and lightweight – almost marshmallow-like – and has a really smooth texture. What’s really unique about it, though, is that it never dries out so you can use it again and again! With so many kids having allergies and sensitivities to certain ingredients, it’s nice to know that Moon Dough is also hypo-allergenic and wheat-free.
However, like any other molding compound, Moon Dough can be messy. It crumbles into tiny pieces and sticks to kids’ clothes, but it’s just as easy to clean up, and doesn’t stain anything. Whatever is in the carpet can be quickly vacuumed up. To pick up all the crumbs on the table, we just made a ball out of the Moon Dough, and dabbed that on to the little pieces. We stored it all in a plastic bag. Come to think of it, it would be nice if the set came with a bag to store it in.
The line offers a variety of enjoyable play sets. Maya and Maura tried out the new Moon Dough Barnyard, which allows them to magically mold their own animals. It comes with 3 bags of Moon Dough, the big molding barn, fence and hay bale molds, and playmat. The molding barn includes 4 different built-in barnyard animal molds – a chicken, pig, sheep and a cow. It took a little bit of practice for the girls to figure out how to use the barnyard mold properly, having to make sure the mold was packed with Moon Dough and learning to turn the handle slowly.
Once they mastered it, the animals that popped out were amazing! From the swirls in the sheep’s wool to the wood grain in the fence, there is incredible detail in each creation.
Moon Dough comes in eight great colors: blue, green, yellow, orange, red, pink, purple, and white, and is available at Toys “R” Us, Target, Walmart, Kmart, A.C. Moore, Michael’s, eToys, and Amazon.com. In addition to the Barnyard pictured above (which retails for $19.99), there are several Moon Dough play sets to choose from – a Moon Dough Pizza Shop, Magic Molding Doghouse, and Moon Dough Burger Shop. Moon Dough refill packs are also available. For more information, please visit www.moondough.com.
